🧠 Feed the Brain, Not Just the Belly: A Colourful Day of Nutrition for Growing Minds

As parents, we all want our children to do well at school, stay healthy, and grow into happy, confident individuals. We invest in their education, encourage them to be active, and support them every step of the way. But one of the most powerful ways we can support their growth often starts in the kitchen.

A child's brain is developing at an incredible rate. Every new word they learn, every memory they create, every skill they master, and every emotion they navigate relies on a brain that needs the right nutrition to thrive.

The good news? Supporting your child's brain doesn't have to be complicated. By including protein, healthy fats, and colourful whole foods throughout the day, you can provide many of the nutritional foundations their growing body and brain need.

BREAKFAST: Rainbow Brain-Power Pancakes

Ingredients

• 1 ripe banana

• 1 egg

• ½ cup oats

• ¼ cup milk

• Pinch of cinnamon

Colourful toppings

• Strawberries or mixed berries

• Banana slices

• Plain yoghurt

• Crushed nuts or seeds (where age-appropriate)

Blend the pancake ingredients, cook small pancakes and let your little ones decorate them with colourful toppings.

Why it's great for growing brains

Eggs provide high-quality protein and choline, oats offer slow-release energy, berries are rich in antioxidants, while nuts and seeds provide healthy fats and minerals that support healthy growth and development.

MORNING SNACK: Apple Doughnuts

Ingredients

• 1 apple

• Peanut or almond butter

• Plain yoghurt

• Crushed nuts or seeds

• Berries or raisins

Slice the apple into thick rings, remove the core and spread with yoghurt or nut butter before decorating.

Why it's great for growing brains

This delicious combination of fruit, fibre, protein and healthy fats provides more sustained energy than sugary snacks alone, helping children avoid energy crashes while keeping them fuller for longer.

LUNCH: Rainbow Chicken Wrap Wheels

Ingredients

• Wholewheat wrap

• Shredded chicken or mashed boiled egg

• Mashed avocado

• Grated carrot

• Thinly sliced cucumber

• Lettuce or baby spinach

• Grated cheese (optional)

Spread the avocado onto the wrap, add the colourful fillings, roll tightly and slice into fun rainbow wheels.

Why it's great for growing brains

Protein supports healthy growth and repair, avocado provides nourishing healthy fats, while colourful vegetables contribute vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants.

AFTERNOON SNACK: Chocolate Banana Brain Bites

Ingredients

• 1 banana

• 2 tbsp oats

• 1 tbsp peanut butter

• 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa

• Optional desiccated coconut

Mash everything together, roll into bite-sized balls and refrigerate until firm.

Why it's great for growing brains

Bananas and oats provide natural energy, peanut butter contributes protein and healthy fats, while cocoa naturally contains beneficial plant compounds and minerals including magnesium.

SUPPER: Build-Your-Own Rainbow Rice Bowl

Ingredients

• Brown or basmati rice

• Pilchards, salmon, chicken or boiled egg

• Sweetcorn

• Grated carrot

• Peas

• Avocado

• Cucumber

• Plain yoghurt with lemon as a dressing

Arrange everything separately and allow your children to build their own colourful bowl.

Why it's great for growing brains

Protein helps support growth and repair, oily fish provides omega-3 fats including DHA, while colourful vegetables add fibre and a variety of important nutrients.

A Simple Rule for Every Meal

Whenever you're preparing a meal or packing a lunchbox, ask yourself three simple questions:

  • Where's the protein?

  • Where's the healthy fat?

  • Where's the colour?

It doesn't have to be perfect, it simply needs to be consistent.

Small, nourishing choices made every day can make a meaningful difference over time. Food is about much more than filling little tummies; it's about providing the nutritional foundations children need to learn, focus, grow and thrive.
